Franz Beckenbauer

The role of attacking sweeper will forever be associated with Franz Beckenbauer who became known as 'Der Kaiser'. For Bayern Munich and for West Germany he was the primary exponent of bringing the ball out of defence to set up attacks for his team. Beckenbauer made his debut for Bayern in 1964. Having played in the German team that reached the 1966 World Cup Final, he won the 1967 Cup-Winners Cup and the 1969 Bundesliga with Bayern Munich. In the 70's, he led both club and country to unprecedented success. He captained West Germany to the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup, while with Bayern he won three successive league titles between 1972 and 1974 and three successive European Cups from 1974 to 1976. He played 103 times for the German national team and scored 14 times.

He was also successful as a manager, guiding West Germany to the 1990 World Cup and later managing Bayern to a Bundesliga title.
