 Rinus Michels had played as a centre-forward and won five caps for Holland before he took over as manager of Ajax halfway through the 1964-65 season. In his first three full seasons in charge, Ajax won the Dutch League championship and then, in 1969 they became the first Dutch side to reach a European Cup Final where they were beaten by Milan. Two years later he guided Ajax to European Cup victory as they beat Panathinaikos at Wembley. Michels then left to take over at Barcelona while the Ajax team that he built won two further European Cups. Michels was also in charge of the Dutch team that reached the 1974 World Cup Final before coaching Holland to the 1988 European Championships.  |
